Week 24 - Brisbane

So the very next morning we hopped on our 5 hour bus journey to Brisbane. A couple of loo stops later we arrived and were checked in to our hostels. I'd got a discount voucher from Joanna so had a nice 2 night cheap deal. I got to my 30-bed dorm and wasn't quite as happy about my special deal. The guy on the top bunk was spraying bed bug spray and warned me that the girl who just left my bed left bed bugs. So I hurried back to reception to ask for a new bed. No luck. No other beds but they said they'd come steam it clean. All I could do was trust that would happen and went for a sunbathe by the pool as the clouds came over...
Me and Julie met for an evening in the hostel and planned our following day. I got to my bed. It looked like it had been cleaned somehow so I was a bit happier abut getting in to it and pleased when I woke up bite free!
We met up and went to purchase our bus tour ticket. We only had a day so thought it'd be cool just to hop on and off a bus to see the sights. So we waited at the bus stop and it came really quickly. But it was full. We couldn't even get on it. What's the falming point in that? The next bus wasn't for another hour. So we walked for ages looking for another stop, or the ferry port. But it was so hot we just got a bit hot and bothered and thought it a bit waste of money if we couldn't even get on the stupid bus. So we returned to get a refund. But they wouldn't give us one. After a couple of calls to the council (it never is easy), we admitted defeat and went back to the bus stop. Eventually it arrived and we were able to get on it! Hurrah. So we went up to the view point. It was just a view point - nice view of the city. It took about 5 mins to see what we wanted and then another 40 minute wait for the next bus! Which, can I add, was a regular hopper bus. It wasn't even open top, haha.
So next stop the ferry. We hopped on what we thought was the right way to go, but obviously it wasn't, so then we turned round and went back up the river. It was such a gorgeous day though so the boat trip and the breeze was really nice. We got off at Southbank and had a look around. It's got the same buzzy feel as London Southbank so I really liked it. And because there's no coast in Brisbane, they have stuck one in the park. A beach I mean. Just walking along and then boom. There's a beach. And then no beach. We had a drink and then thought we should find our next stop as the last bus wasn't too far away timewise. The map we were using was rubbish. Anyway so we asked a transport police guy who said there wasn't a bus stop down the road we were asking about. He told us we should go to the bus station. We didn't believe him but went anyway. Lo and behold it was wrong. We headed back to where we thought it could be again and Julie spotted it. And yes we'd missed the bus so we sat and waited 40 minutes for the next one!! Haha. We did laugh about it though and had some good chats as we waited.
Next stop china town. We got there expecting a long street to walk down. China Town was about 100 metres long!! If we'd thought about it we could have caught the same bus who was still in traffic where we left him. It was really funny day though. That evening we went to a bar that enticed us in with it being ladies night. We got chatting to 3 blokes from Oz. 2 lawyers and a copper! At last, no northerners haha.
